The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 and taught to him 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
