The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 and taught to him 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
