The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 What! Will man get whatever he dreams of? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
