A company of the former peoples 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
