a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
