A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
