a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 “We have been penalised; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
