A numerous company from among the first, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
