a good many of olden times, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
