A multitude of those of old 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
