The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Save worshippers. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
