The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
