The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
