The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 except those that pray 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 and guard their private parts 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
