The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those that pray, 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
