The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 who guard their privates 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
