The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
