The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those that pray 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Are free of blame, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
