The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And your garments purify! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
