The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 arise, and warn! 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 frowned and scowled; 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
