The Human (Al-Insan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
WAS THERE NOT a time in the life of man when he was not even a mentionable thing? 1 Indeed We have created man from mixed semen; in order to test him – We therefore made him hearing, knowing. 2 We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful. 3 [Now,] behold, for those who deny the truth We have readied chains and shackles, and a blazing flame 4 [whereas,] behold, the truly virtuous shall drink from a cup flavoured with the calyx of sweet-smelling flowers: 5 which flows from a spring from which the servants of God will drink. 6 They (are those who) fulfill (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil will be wide-spreading. 7 And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive,- 8 Saying: we feed you only for the sake of Allah; we desire not from you any recompense or thanks. 9 we fear from our Lord a Day that shall be long and distressful.” 10 So Allah shall guard them against the woe of that Day, and will procure them freshness and joy, 11 and recompense them for their patience with a Garden, and robes of silk. 12 Reclining therein on raised thrones, they will see there neither the excessive heat of the sun, nor the excessive bitter cold, (as in Paradise there is no sun and no moon). 13 The shades of Paradise will bend over them, and its fruits will be brought within their easy reach; 14 And brought round amongst them will be vessels of silver and also goblets of glass. 15 crystal-like, [but] of silver - the measure whereof they alone will determine. 16 They will drink cups containing (soft flowing) sparkling water 17 Which is a spring in Paradise called Salsabeel. 18 ۞ And round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness): If thou seest them, thou wouldst think them scattered Pearls. 19 When thou seest, thou wilt see there bliss and high estate. 20 Upon the inhabitants will be green garments of fine silk and brocade. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink. 21 Behold, this is a recompense for you, and your striving is thanked.' 22
