The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ ABOUT WHAT do they [most often] ask one another? 1 (It is) of the awful tidings, 2 whereupon they are at variance? 3 No indeed; they shall soon know! 4 Again, no indeed; they shall soon know! 5 Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse, 6 and the mountains as pegs? 7 and created you in pairs (as men and women), 8 And made sleep for you to rest, 9 made the night as a covering, 10 and made the day for earning a livelihood. 11 And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments, 12 and placed in them a blazing lamp 13 And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water 14 That We may produce therewith corn and vegetations, 15 and thick gardens grow? 16 Surely the Day of Decision is an appointed time, 17 On that day the trumpet will be sounded and you will come (to Us) in huge groups. 18 And the heaven is opened and becometh as gates, 19 and the mountains move, and vaporize. 20 Truly, Hell is a place of ambush, 21 For the transgressors a place of destination: 22 Where they will remain for aeons, 23 They shall not taste therein cool nor drink 24 only burning despair and ice-cold darkness: 25 a meet requital [for their sins]! 26 For lo! they looked not for a reckoning; 27 having given the lie to Our messages one and all: 28 but We have recorded everything in a Book. 29 [So We shall say], "Taste, then, [the fruit of your evil doings,] for now We shall bestow on you nothing but more and more suffering!" 30
