He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 You neglect. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 Olives and dates, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and grass, 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
