He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you attended to him, 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 These verses are a reminder 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and purified. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And produce therein corn, 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And dense gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 mother, father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
