He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fearfully, 9 you ignore him. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
