Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn; 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
