Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and ten nights, 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
