Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 The multiple and the one, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
