Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
