Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 and the ten nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
