Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the break of Day 1 And ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter then My garden." 30
