Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn, 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
