Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
