The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
