The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
