The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
