The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 Prosperous is he who purifies it, 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 Thamood cried lies in their insolence 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
