The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the sun and its brightness 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 when the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil). 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
