The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 They do not expect any reward 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
