The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 And accepts the best, 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
