The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And rejects the best, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
