The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 We shall facilitate the path to bliss 5 And affirms goodness, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
