The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 They do not expect any reward 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
