The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 created man from a clot of congealed blood. 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 He taught the human being what he did not know. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran), and turns away? 13 Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? 14 No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay! (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him))! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah! ۩ 19
True are the words of God the Almighty.
End of Surah: The Embryo (Al-Alaq). Sent down in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before
