۞ It is He Who has created you from a single person (Adam), and (then) He has created from him his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], in order that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her. When he had sexual relation with her, she became pregnant and she carried it about lightly. Then when it became heavy, they both invoked Allah, their Lord (saying): "If You give us a Salih (good in every aspect) child, we shall indeed be among the grateful." 189 But when He vouchsafeth the twain a goodly child they set up unto Him associates in respect of that which He hath vouchsafed to them. Exalted be Allah far from that which they associate! 190 Associate they those who cannot create aught and are created? 191 and neither are able to give them succour nor can succour themselves, 192 And if ye call them to the Guidance, they follow you not. Whether ye call them or are silent is all one for you. 193 Those whom you invoke besides God are created beings like you. So call on them and let them answer your call, if what you say is true. 194 Have they feet on which they can walk? Have they hands with which they can grasp? Have they eyes with which they can see? Have they ears with which they can hear? Say [O Muhammad]: 'Invoke all those to whom you ascribe a share in Allah's divinity, then scheme against me and grant me no respite. 195 The (true) Guardian is certainly God who has revealed the Book and is the Guardian of the righteous ones. 196 And those on whom you call, apart from God, have no power to help you, neither they help themselves.' 197 And if you call them to guidance they do not listen; and you (Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) observe them looking towards you, whereas they do not perceive anything. 198 Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant. 199 If a suggestion from Satan assail thy (mind), seek refuge with Allah; for He heareth and knoweth (all things). 200 Lo! those who ward off (evil), when a glamour from the devil troubleth them, they do but remember (Allah's Guidance) and behold them seers! 201 But their brethren (the evil ones) plunge them deeper into error, and never relax (their efforts). 202 And whenever thou bringest not unto them, as a sign, they say: wherefore hast not thou selected it? Say thou: I only follow that which hath been revealed unto me by my Lord. This is an enlightenment from your Lord and a guidance and a mercy unto a people who believe. 203 So, when the Quran is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imam (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except Surat Al-Fatiha), and also when he is delivering the Friday-prayer Khutbah]. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 9, Pages 162-4] 204 And remember thou thy Lord within thyself with humility and fear, without loudness in word, in the morning and evenings; and be thou not of the negligent. 205 Verily those who are in the presence of your Lord are never too proud to worship and celebrate His praises, and bow in homage to Him'. ۩ 206
