Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf- Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 This is the remembrance of the mercy of your Lord upon His bondman Zakaria. 2 When he called to his Lord inwardly, 3 saying: 'O my Lord, my bones are enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet, never Lord, have I been unblessed in prayer to You. 4 I fear evil from my kinsmen after I am gone; and my wife is barren, so grant me an heir out of Your special grace, 5 Who shall inherit of me and inherit (also) of the house of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, acceptable (unto Thee). 6 'O Zachariah, We give thee good tidings of a boy, whose name is John. No namesake have We given him aforetime.' 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age." 8 [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' " 9 [Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." 10 So he went forth to his people from his place of worship, then he made known to them that they should glorify (Allah) morning and evening. 11 (It was said to his son): "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. 12 and We also endowed him with tenderness and purity, and he was exceedingly pious 13 and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. 14 Peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he will die, and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
