Certainly Aaron had said to them even before (the return of Moses): "My people, you were fallen into error because of the calf. Surely your Lord is Most Compassionate; so follow me and obey my command." 90 'We will not cease,' they said, 'to cleave to it, until Moses returns to us.') 91 (After rebuking his people) Moses turned to Aaron and said: "Aaron! What prevented you, when you saw them going astray, 92 "From following me? Didst thou then disobey my order?" 93 Answered [Aaron]: "O my mother's son! Seize me not by my beard, nor by my head! Behold, I was afraid lest [on thy return] thou say, 'Thou hast caused a split among the children of Israel, and hast paid no heed to my bidding!" 94 [Musa (Moses)] said: "And what is the matter with you. O Samiri? (i.e. why did you do so?)" 95 He said, "I perceived what they did not see. So I took a handful [of dust] from the footprint of the Messenger and threw it in [the calf]. That is what my inner self prompted me to do." 96 Musa (Moses) said: "Then go away! And verily, your (punishment) in this life will be that you will say: "Touch me not (i.e. you will live alone exiled away from mankind); and verily (for a future torment), you have a promise that will not fail. And look at your ilah (god), to which you have been devoted. We will certainly burn it, and scatter its particles in the sea." 97 Your God is only One, Allah. There is no god, except He, alone. His knowledge encompasses all things. 98 Thus We tell you, (Muhammad), the stories of the past and We have given you the Quran. 99 If any do turn away therefrom, verily they will bear a burden on the Day of judgment; 100 They will abide in this (state): and grievous will the burden be to them on that Day,- 101 On the day when the Trumpet is blown and We shall assemble the guilty on that day, blue -eyed. 102 whispering unto one another, "You have spent but ten [days on earth] 103 We know best what they will say, when their leader most eminent in conduct will say: "Ye tarried not longer than a day!" 104
