'This', said he (Pharaoh) to his Council, 'is a cunning sorcerer 34 He wants to expel you from your land through his magic. What is your opinion?" 35 They said: Give him and his brother respite and send heralds into the cities 36 Who shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard. 37 So the magicians were gathered at a set time on a day appointed. 38 And it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering? 39 Haply we shall follow the sorcerers if it should be they are the victors.' 40 And when the wizards came they said unto Pharaoh: Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners? 41 He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)." 42 Musa (Moses) said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw!" 43 So they threw down their ropes and their staves and exclaimed, “By the honour of Firaun, indeed victory is ours!” 44 Then Moses threw down his staff, and lo, it swallowed up their conjurations. 45 And the wizards were flung prostrate, 46 saying: 'We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 47 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 48 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all." 49 They said: "There will be no harm. We shall return to our Lord. 50 Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers." 51
