The Ad gave the lie to the Messengers. 123 When their brother Hood said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 124 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Do you build useless monuments on every mountain 128 And do you take to yourselves underground reservoirs, in order to live for ever! 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants. 130 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 131 and fear Him who has succoured you with what you know, 132 "Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons,- 133 "And Gardens and Springs. 134 'Indeed, I fear for you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 135 They said: "It is the same to us if you warn us or do not warn. 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 So they belied him, so We destroyed them. Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 139 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 140
