(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 "Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
