Thamud denied the messengers 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
